Willman Morcillo Bio
Like a lot of today's finest artists Willman draws on a variety of musical genres. He takes the spirited elements of Nouveau Flamenco, Pop, Rock, Latin and Jazz styles, to create his own fiery blend of international world pop music.
His influences range from Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, through the beloved salsa of his birth-place, Cali, Colombia down through Led Zeppelin and the hard rock scene of the 70's and 80's to where he is today, inspired by the mystical sounds of Spanish flamenco music.
His life as an artist started after a career as a professional and semi-professional soccer player in the USA, Colombia, Canada and Mexico. His focus and inspiration are in blending his music, his styles, and his band members in a way that is representative of his vision for harmony amongst the diverse peoples of earth.
Raised in Colombia, New Orleans and Southern California, Willman was surrounded by the musical passions of his parents. As a young man, he briefly took lessons in guitar and accordion. At 14, he began to work to master his art. He started songwriting soon after. By age 20 he put his first band together with his best friend, and later spent time in the 80’s Los Angeles Metal Scene. At the time he was still playing pro and semi-pro soccer with the Los Angeles Exiles.
The Heavy Metal scene in Hollywood in the 80's, acoustic ventures and soul searching throughout the 90's and finally, THE GIPSY KINGS in December of 1994, brought him to where he is today. A guitarist of many influences seeking to entertain as well as help to change his fellow man's conditions.
In 1999, he found himself ready to learn the complex right hand patterns of his new found passion, Spanish flamenco, while performing both guitar and vocals throughout his second home town of San Diego, Ca. In January, 2003, he collaborated with a friend on his first hardcopy of his new world vision. The disc, entitled "The Scorpion King", also included flavors of Latin, Rock and Jazz styles, as well as one Hindi vocal by a woman from India.
Currently, Willman is rehearsing his band, plus guest artists, which include a variety of sounds including percussion, violin, flute, saxophone and other vocalists. On many occasions, their performance is accented with dance. After his years on soccer teams that were at least 15 strong, he prefers a stage full of musicians. Additionally, he has sculpted a solo act that will sometimes include one or two other players, and features his silky, yet strong vocals. Willman can be found performing in the Los Angeles and Southern California area on a weekly basis.
