A generous idea, Richard. In particular, I like your idea of collecting and publishing the best on paper. I'm sure many excellent lit mags were spawned by a similar impulse. One mag running a WEEKLY contest with similar parameters is Narrative. Ch...

Brief Bio
Richard A. McCullough began his writing career at age 10 with his horror story, "To Commit a Murder" based loosely on Edger Alan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart."

Richard has completed thousands of poems, and dozens of short stories. His Science-Fiction short story, "Mirror Image" was awarded "First Runner Up" in L. Ron Hubbard's, Writers of the Future contest. Recently, Richard has competed two novels in mainstream/historical fiction and is working on a third. He has also completed the first two of a three volume set of non-fiction books titled "Cracking the Master Storytellers Code".

Writers are crucial to the survival of a culture.

For a culture transmits itself to future generations through its fiction, in whatever form; be it novel, short story, poem, play or song. It is not the dry dusty textbooks that tell us where we have been nor where we are going but the storyteller who codifies who we are and who we wish to become.

6-Degrees of Separation

We’re familiar with the idea of there being only 6 people between you and anyone else in the world – and that’s a good thing.

However, consider that there are countless-degrees of separation between you and reality – and that’s not such a good thing. I can hear people’s heads spinning. Let me explain.

Not all that long ago a man could very easily see what he was actually doing.

You pick up a saddle and stick it on a horse. One can see, feel, and smell, etc., the horse and the saddle. Not to m… Continue

More on "Natural Talent"

I've received a few questions about my article "Regarding - Natural Talent" so I thought I'd clarify the point.

>>The more "natural talent" an artist was "born with" and the less training they have had in the correct technology in their craft the more vulnerable they are to outside criticism and self doubt.<<

Oh, I know it's a pretty sweeping statement.

But being one myself and raising three others, and having talked with many others - I've found this to be fare more the case, tha… Continue

A conversation with Marry Anne

Mary Anne sent me this and its worth a read
But my "reply" was too long so I'm posting the whole thing here.

>>Just read both the SYSTEMS and NATURAL TALENT, too bad I didn't join this circle sooner - I would have not wasted my time with Self-Publishing my first book...lesson learned for jumping the gun...the book would be two years old come this November and only made me about twenty four dollars, I'm out six grand and still have no way of knowing if the book is really selling or not.Continue

Selfpublishing - The Best Game in town

Selfpublishing - the Best Game in town.pdf

Oh, I remember Portland.

Pretty little town, interesting cycle. My wife and I spent about 3 months there in the '85 you mentioned.

You say we met in LA. I'll have to take your word for it. Sorry, but I still can't place meeting you. But be that as it may, we're here now. And you seem like a perfectly good chap. Your more than welcome to read the various discussions I instigated in the writers and poets forums, and weigh in with anything you might feel like sharing.

There was a time in '85 when religious freedom was threatened in no small way in the town of Portland Oregon...and I met you and your wife in Los Angeles during that time.

Richard I shared your performance with the producer of my DVD
As I adored your wit in your writings with Kleenex in my hand.
Studio camera panned the room you whistled words like a lark.
You screen your laugh lines that kept tickles in my throat.
Hilarity! Listen to my poems at your own risk, humor is required..
Audience resettle slyly as you engage minds in peels of laughter.
Your story telling is indeed amusing visions of innocent.
An icon in the poetic world deserve mega bites standing ovations. .

hi richard thankyou for the compliments and the friend request and yes your hat is as cool as mine hehe (although mine is probably more dusty these days) i read your blog when i first joined and was very interested in what you had to say on the subject of story writing, the quest is my first attempt at a full novel ( around 99,000 words) as i usually write poetry, songs and short stories this one however just flowed and felt like it had to be written, look forward to reading more of your blog.
