The Crashing Misunderstood Word

What if everything we've studied as fiction writers was studied over a "Crashing Misunderstood Word"?Do you suppose that might suppress our understanding of the subject and therefore affect our ability to write?  What if I told you there is such a Crashing Misunderstood Word, common to all fiction writers? In fact, this single word affects all writers of fiction or non-fiction.  What would you be willing to do to clear up that Misunderstood Word?See More

Brief Bio
Richard A. McCullough began his writing career at age 10 with his horror story, "To Commit a Murder" based loosely on Edger Alan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart."

Richard has completed thousands of poems, and dozens of short stories. His Science-Fiction short story, "Mirror Image" was awarded "First Runner Up" in L. Ron Hubbard's, Writers of the Future contest. Recently, Richard has competed two novels in mainstream/historical fiction and is working on a third. He has also completed the first two of a three volume set of non-fiction books titled "Cracking the Master Storytellers Code".

Writers are crucial to the survival of a culture.

For a culture transmits itself to future generations through its fiction, in whatever form; be it novel, short story, poem, play or song. It is not the dry dusty textbooks that tell us where we have been nor where we are going but the storyteller who codifies who we are and who we wish to become.

Richard A. McCullough's Written Works

There and Back Again

I was just a lad of 9 who (having discovered the wonders of Poe) thought he'd write a line or two, but soon realized there was mystery to the mastery, and so went

looking for the Wizard of Oz only to discover (after much travail) that all

that remained behind the tattered curtain was the skeletal fragments of a once

vibrant oral tradition.

To shocked and enraged to simply walk away, I rummaged…

It’s About The “STORY”.

It’s all about “story”.

Novel, Screenplay, Play, Short Story, Poem are all just “formats”. Different storytelling formats.

The first thing one must understand is “story” what is a story?

Now, the problem is that everyone thinks they know what a story is because they have been listening, reading and watching them their whole life.

But that’s like reasoning that one knows how to “build a house” just because they have been living in one their whole… Continue

6-Degrees of Separation

We’re familiar with the idea of there being only 6 people between you and anyone else in the world – and that’s a good thing.

However, consider that there are countless-degrees of separation between you and reality – and that’s not such a good thing. I can hear people’s heads spinning. Let me explain.

Not all that long ago a man could very easily see what he was actually doing.

You pick up a saddle and stick it on a horse. One can see, feel, and smell, etc., the… Continue

More on "Natural Talent"

I've received a few questions about my article "Regarding - Natural Talent" so I thought I'd clarify the point.

>>The more "natural talent" an artist was "born with" and the less training they have had in the correct technology in their craft the more vulnerable they are to outside criticism and self doubt.

Oh, I know it's a pretty sweeping statement.

But being one myself and raising three others, and having talked with many others - I've found… Continue

Hi Kris,

You're welcome for the invite.

I'd imagine that your local police station has a "mug-shot" they'll let you borrow. That's where I get all my photos.

Yea, keep your paws off da' hat - yu' got to get your own. It's a requirement. HA!

Hang around, talk to some folk. It's a cool group.

I am appalled by your callous attitude toward the minority groups. Further, I just may be scarred for life. Who are you to say that vampires and such don't exist? Next thing you know, you'll be telling me Santa Claus doesn't exist either. Duh! He's a vampire! How else could he get around the world in one night? Vampire speed, silly! :-)

LOL

PS Actually, they don't care what blood type you are. And that garlic your wife keeps around? It's a myth that it repels them. Nothing will protect you, Richard, except your resourcefulness - and you'd better be really good with a sword because you'll have to cut off his head. If there is anything else you need to know about vampires, feel free to ask. :-)

hi richard thankyou for the compliments and the friend request and yes your hat is as cool as mine hehe (although mine is probably more dusty these days) i read your blog when i first joined and was very interested in what you had to say on the subject of story writing, the quest is my first attempt at a full novel ( around 99,000 words) as i usually write poetry, songs and short stories this one however just flowed and felt like it had to be written, look forward to reading more of your blog.

Richard I shared your performance with the producer of my DVD
As I adored your wit in your writings with Kleenex in my hand.
Studio camera panned the room you whistled words like a lark.
You screen your laugh lines that kept tickles in my throat.
Hilarity! Listen to my poems at your own risk, humor is required..
Audience resettle slyly as you engage minds in peels of laughter.
Your story telling is indeed amusing visions of innocent.
An icon in the poetic world deserve mega bites standing ovations. .

Oh, I remember Portland.

Pretty little town, interesting cycle. My wife and I spent about 3 months there in the '85 you mentioned.

You say we met in LA. I'll have to take your word for it. Sorry, but I still can't place meeting you. But be that as it may, we're here now. And you seem like a perfectly good chap. Your more than welcome to read the various discussions I instigated in the writers and poets forums, and weigh in with anything you might feel like sharing.

New Rhinoceros Children's Book

I've been having a great year and creating lots of new things with Jenny. Over Christmas I was missing my guy Jack, so I wrote a book for him, then Jenny illustrated it. It's called The Toughskin Rhinoceros Wrangler Company. It's a simple story about the lengths we are willing to go to to see the people we miss. And there are dancing rhinoceroses. Here's some of Jenny's art…See More

The Threshold Bookcast : Chapter 13 : Keys To Ascension

Chapter 13 : Keys To AscensionRahu Lüli, the teenage monk from Kõrgus, is once again the central character of the weekly instalment of the Threshold Bookcast. This time, we find the novice reminiscing as he explores unknown territory uphill, following a hunch that has occurred to him prior to the morning ritual. « « Gazing up, the apprentice had detected an odd detail. Something was decidedly wrong about the view, and it couldn't but have a meaning. Over the years, the pitch black walls of…See More

Art is my World

During my earliest year in Elementary School, the only hobby that steals my time is sketching on my notebook. While my teacher is discussing and writing on the board, I am in my chair at the back busy in sketching. In that time I believed that learning could not be taken only from school, and knowledge is not only about speaking and writing but also drawing. My mother exasperated every time she checks my notebook because what she found was not my homework but those faces of my favorite anime like…See More
