About Jan Houston

Throughout her professional lifetime as a performing artist - both singer and actor - writer and editor, photographer, producer and human rights activist, Jan Houston has remained a compassionate and entertaining voice in a world she helps to wake.

As a past professional jazz and rock singer for two decades, and a poet warrior since age 9, she has been showcased in many prestigous publications and venues and has been Awarded for Outstanding Achievement by Artists For A Better World.

Current projects include her upcoming novel HAVENWOOD and expanded editions of her poetry volumes - HEROES AND OTHER SPIRITS and SEASONS OF THE MOON - plus her latest, CROSSROADS OF A WOMAN'S HEART.

The author, on the art of writing: "As with any writer, my works can (indeed) seem like my children - except that, unlike my children, I have the option and duty to guide them to be precisely what I choose. But after I craft and cut and hone and push and pull them around like so much Silly Putty, there is a point when - if I just listen and let them say what they want and become what they are - some of them actually turn out great."

Jan resides with her husband, documentary filmmaker and producer, Tom Solari, in Burbank, California.

THE GREATNESS THAT WAS GREECE

…is yet alive
beyond the lofty ruins
of a dusty myth
its fate cast from Olympus
like scattered artifacts
among the armless statues of
alabaster gods and goddesses
honed featureless
by the winds of time
and salt of an Aegean shore
longing for life
in the touch of a stranger
from a Golden Age

The greatness that was Greece
abides not in cracked columns
standing sentinel on an Acropolis
hosting Aristotle vs. Plato
in the echoes of an empty Parthenon
where spirits whisper
to ancestors centuries remo… Continue

SANCTUARY

Steal me away from days
broken into
by the crime of time
riddled with rude demand
seared by the roar
of banality
circle me with forest
fill me with scent
of cedar and loam
carry me home
to the exquisite clarity
of your remembered arms
to warm in your
sweet easiness
to be alive with you

I offer you my air
the soothing movement
of these phantom hands
below images of arms
shadows of leaves
sprawling in sunlight
and colors of blue
only the birds
are allowed to wear

I bring magenta flowers
my very… Continue

ART POLICE

Gather up the bullhorns!
call out the populace!
gotta outlaw summa this
pie sky love dove
words-gotta-rhyme
and fish-gotta-swim
stick-figure
box-brained mentality
…well, atleast some of it
RIGHT NOW
So GO !!

GO wake up the blind
sober up the drugged
unplug the robots
and let’s cook up
some REAL Art
Heart Art
passion colored
Flower Art
sharp and rendered
perfect as a tango...
Art that’s salty and alive
blue and wetter
than a saint’s tears
lie stealin’
truth revealin’
righteous as religion

Just noticed your photos!!!! Don't remember seeing them there B4 but maybe I just didn't look "rightly". Truly beautiful!

Jennifer is my sister-in-law (in case you hadn't figured out there was some relationship there.)

My hubbie & I stopped by Dana and Robert's on the way to New Mexico from FL (we just moved back "home" to Albuquerque.) Dana told me they were going out to Delphi. Hunter is quite a pill!! Yet also so well mannered and bright!! It was lovely to see them all.

This is great, Sharon. There's no void of down-toned comm on our planet today. You make a great point about creating "good effects", not only in our art, but in our lives as we lead them. That is what Ron says in Route To Infinity- just being a bea…

Your verses leave me detached, suspended in the silence of me. And then the endless contemplations of "what if" so much beauty could fill the spaces of us all.
